SJM awards scholarships to 40 children of staff
(Macau, 3 August 2010) – Dedicated to nurturing future talent for society, Sociedade de Jogos de Macau, S.A. ("SJM") held its 6th SJM Scholarship Presentation Ceremony for children of staff at Kam Pek Community Centre today. SJM directors and management celebrated this happy occasion with the award-winning students and their families.
The SJM Scholarship Selection Committee received 48 applications this year. After assessing the students' academic results and group interviews, the Committee selected 10 outstanding students as recipients of the 2010 SJM Scholarship. They were Chang Chi Ngai, Lei Weng In, Ao Wai San, Leong Ka Hou, Lei Hio Kuan, Chao Chi U, Wong Iok Peng, Kuok In I, Kuan Un Man and Lei Hoi Lam. Dr. Ambrose So, Director of SJM and Chairman of the SJM Scholarship Selection Committee, presented the awards to them at the ceremony. Each of the students is given an annual scholarship of MOP20,000 until they finish their university studies (up to 5 years).
Dr. Ambrose So in his speech reminded the students to pursue lifelong learning. As he said, "What you have achieved now is only a tiny semi-colon in your life. You need to add more of them to your life as each represents a dream that is fulfilled." Dr. So pointed out that Macau had undergone a long growing process, which involved the hard work of many generations, to become a modern city of today, and he hoped that young people would carry forward the traditional core values of "Benevolence, Righteousness, Propriety, Wisdom and Sincerity" of the Chinese nation in building a harmonious society for Macau. "'You make a living by what you get. You make a life by what you give' - I believe that with your joint efforts dedicated to the overall interests of society, Macau will enjoy a better tomorrow," Dr. So said to the students. Dr. So reiterated the vision of Managing Director Dr. Stanley Ho to nurture future talent, and talked about SJM’s support to the development of education, including provision of school fees for staff to further studies at Macau Millennium College, and sponsorship for educational activities in schools and universities.
Chang Chi Ngai, on behalf of all awardees, thanked SJM for the encouragement and support. She highly commended SJM’s corporate social responsibility in extending help to various sectors of society, and promised that they would continue to study hard to repay society. In addition, she also thanked family members, teachers and friends for their guidance and advice.
Today's ceremony also saw the presentation of scholarships to 30 award-winning students of past years by Mr. Louis Ng, Director and Chief Operating Officer of SJM, and Dr. Rui Cunha, Director of SJM. The students were each awarded MOP20,000 to continue their studies in the new academic year. Among them, Tsui Kit Leng and Chu Ka Pou were named the best students for the year 2009-2010, who were each given an encouragement award of MOP3,000.
The SJM Scholarship aims to award distinguished students to further their university studies, and to help nurture future talent for society. For children of staff, the SJM Scholarship provides 10 scholarships each year, to students who are each awarded MOP20,000 per year until they finish their studies (up to five years). The Selection Committee will determine yearly, based on the academic results of the students, if they are qualified for receiving the scholarship in the new academic year. Since established in 2005, the SJM Scholarship programme has awarded 59 students, among them 17 students have graduated.
