
SJM opens Casino Oceanus at Jai Alai - the "first" casino in Macau
(Macau, 15 December 2009) – Today saw the official opening of the most recent casino in the SJM portfolio of properties - Casino Oceanus at Jai Alai.
The officiating guests of the event included the Chief Executive of the Macau SAR Mr. Edmund Ho, Deputy Director of The Liaison Office of the Central People's Government in the Macau SAR Ms. Gao Yan, Commissioner of The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of The People's Republic of China in the Macau SAR Mr. Lu Shu Min, and Secretary for Economy and Finance of Macau SAR Mr. Francis Tam, accompanied by directors of SJM, Dr. Ambrose So, Mr. Louis Ng and Ms. Angela Leong, who formally opened the property.
Dr. So, Chief Executive Officer of SJM Holdings Limited (Stock code: 880), warmly welcomed the guests on behalf of Dr. Stanley Ho and the board of directors of SJM. He said, "Oceanus is the latest development in SJM's continuing support of Macau. As the only concessionaire with its roots in Macau, we take pride in growing our business while contributing to society following the principles of Dr. Ho. We take pride in our company being part of the success story of Macau."
"Oceanus is the first casino that passengers reach upon arriving at the ferry terminal, as well as the first casino visitors reach on entry through the Gongbei border on the northern end of the Macau Peninsula. This 'double first' casino promises to be the latest landmark of Macau," he continued.
After the speech of Dr. Ambrose So, the officiating guests hosted the lighting ceremony of Oceanus, followed by lion dance. An ocean-themed cocktail with entertainment performances was specially arranged for the guests on the second floor of the property.
Located at the transportation hub at the Outer Harbour District, the property comprises more than 32,000 square metres of gaming space over three floors housing more than 260 table games and over 560 slot machines. There is also a range of food and beverage outlets and retail shops.
Designed by the renowned casino architect, Paul Steelman, its interior is decorated in cool blue colours combined with warm reds, oranges and greens reminding the visitor of the colours of the sea and corals.
The façades of Oceanus are comprised of irregular shapes made of ETFE membrane, giving the visual impression of the building being enveloped in multi coloured bubbles.
With its immediately recognisable exterior visible from many angles, Casino Oceanus at Jai Alai will add significantly to the attractions of Macau ensuring a continuing flow of tourists to the city bringing increased wealth to its society.
