SJM continues title sponsorship of Theodore Racing team for 62nd Macau Grand Prix
(Macau, 19 October 2015) – Sociedade de Jogos de Macau, S.A. (“SJM”) is pleased to announce its continued support as title sponsor and official partner of Theodore Racing at the 62nd Macau Grand Prix to be held in November.
SJM increased its support of Theodore Racing last year to become the team’s title sponsor and official partner. This successful partnership continues for 2015 as the team aims to become Macau GP Champions for a record eighth time. This year also welcomes ICBC (Macau) as a Promotion Partner of the SJM Theodore Racing team.
Theodore Racing has been synonymous with the Macau Grand Prix since its founder Teddy Yip, known as “Mr. Macau Grand Prix”, first competed as a driver in 1956, and went on to enter or sponsor racing teams until 1992, amassing a record total of six Macau Grand Prix victories. Following a 21-year-break from competition, his son, Teddy Jr., revived the team name with SJM in 2013 for what proved to be a triumphant return, as British driver Alex Lynn scored Theodore Racing’s seventh Macau Grand Prix victory.
The trio of SJM Theodore Racing by Prema entries for the 2015 event, which utilise Mercedes-Benz powered Dallara Formula 3 cars, will be driven by Sweden’s Felix Rosenqvist, Jake Dennis of Great Britain and Canada’s Lance Stroll.
Mercedes-backed driver Rosenqvist is the reigning Formula 3 Macau GP Champion and was crowned the 2015 FIA European Formula 3 Champion last month. Dennis sits third overall, two places ahead of Stroll, a member of the Ferrari Formula One Driver Academy, who lies fifth overall. They will join a star-studded group: of the 26 drivers who competed at Macau for Theodore from 1978-92, no fewer than 25 went on to become Formula One drivers. Four of Theodore’s drivers also went on to become future World Champions: Keke Rosberg, Alan Jones, Mika Hakkinen and the legendary Ayrton Senna.
Speaking about the continued partnership, Dr. Ambrose So, Chairman of the Board of Directors of SJM, said, “We are thrilled to extend our title sponsorship of Theodore Racing, a world famous institution with a local heritage that parallels SJM, at the 62nd Macau Grand Prix. SJM has always supported the development of sporting activities and tourism in Macau. In addition to being the title sponsor of SJM Theodore Racing at the Formula 3 Race, we are also the title sponsor of the SJM Macau GT Cup, which this year is also the world's first FIA GT World Cup. We believe that our involvement with the internationally-renowned Macau Grand Prix will help strengthen Macau’s role as a world centre of tourism and leisure.”.
Mr. Teddy Yip Jr. said, “It is a privilege for Theodore Racing to return to the Macau Grand Prix with our title sponsor SJM and promotion partner ICBC (Macau). Theodore and SJM share the same drive and passion for this event, which strengthens our relationship year on year. We are targeting victory once again by fielding the current Macau GP Champion Felix Rosenqvist and Formula 3 front-runners Lance Stroll and Jake Dennis.
“Rene consistently provides us with the best prepared cars on the grid and our long-standing relationship with SJM ensures that Theodore Racing is always at the forefront of the glamour and excitement of this city-wide motorsport carnival.”
SJM Theodore Racing team manager Rene Rosin added, “It is a huge privilege to be back representing Theodore Racing and SJM at Macau for the third consecutive year. The line-up comes from a careful analysis and it features a mix of experience, speed skills and determination. I am sure that everybody’s dedication to the job will help us achieve some great results.”
