
SJM unveils unique creations by artists from Portuguese-speaking countries – Grand finale of SJM’s “ART • Appreciation • Legacy”
Sociedade de Jogos de Macau, S.A. (“SJM”) proudly counted down its “ART • Appreciation • Legacy” exhibition series on 4 October 2019 at Grand Lisboa with its Grand Finale, unfolding Macau’s vivid cultural diversity through exhibiting over 60 unique works created by 18 artists from Portuguese-speaking countries. Aiming to foster cultural exchange and highlight the unique platform role of Macau between China and Portuguese-speaking countries, this final spectacle concluded a series of seven international art showcases presented by SJM from June to October 2019, as part of the city’s inaugural Art Macao mega culture event.
The Opening Ceremony of Portuguese-speaking Authors – Works from the collection of the PLMJ Foundation was held on 4 October 2019 at Grand Lisboa, Macau, officiated by Mr. Alexis Tam Chon Weng, Secretary for Social Affairs and Culture of the Macau SAR Government, Ms. Zhu Hong, Deputy Director-General of the Economic Affairs Department of the Liaison Office of the Central People’s Government in the Macau SAR, Ambassador Paulo Cunha Alves, Consul General of Portugal in Macau and Hong Kong, Dr. Ambrose So, Honorary Consul of Portugal in Hong Kong, Mr Hoi Io Meng, Acting Director of the Macau Government Tourism Office, Ms. Lei Lai Kio, Head of the Department of Exhibitions and Museums of the Cultural Affairs Bureau of the Macau SAR Government, Ms. Daisy Ho, Chairman of the Board of Directors of SJM, Ms. Angela Leong, Managing Director and Chief Administrative Officer of SJM, and Ms. Patrícia Dias Mendes, Senior Associate of PLMJ Foundation.
Chairman of the Board of Directors of SJM Ms. Daisy Ho said, “Diverse cultures coexist in Macau with mutual respect, learning from each other and developing together, forming the basis of a harmonious society. SJM is pleased to participate in the first edition of Art Macao by organising seven exhibitions under the theme of ‘ART • Appreciation • Legacy’, promoting Chinese culture and multi-cultural exchanges in Macau, and has received overwhelming response. With Macau’s role as a platform between China and Portuguese-speaking countries, we hope to bring the viewers through this finale exhibition closer to the Portuguese-speaking realm of Art to take our exchanges and co-operation to a new level.”
Ms. Angela Leong, Managing Director and Chief Administrative Officer of SJM, added, “Cultures from the East and the West have coexisted and interacted in Macau for over 400 years. We are delighted to join PLMJ Foundation from Portugal in exhibiting these original works by artists from Portuguese-speaking countries created in an exotic environment, reflecting also our long-standing friendship with Portuguese-speaking countries.”
Portuguese-speaking Authors – Works from the collection of the PLMJ Foundation exhibited over 60 fine works collected by Portugal-based PLMJ Foundation, created by 18 artists from Portuguese-speaking countries living in many cities and places around the world in a context of a diaspora. Looking closer at the new aesthetic proposals and experiences of the Portuguese-speaking world, this exhibition aimed to bring new interpretations and a global perspective on artistic creation. The exhibition was held from 4 to 31 October 2019 at Grand Lisboa’s hotel lobby and 7/F Peach Blossom Room.
In addition, Celestial Sphere – Contemporary Glass Art Exhibition by Meng Shu ran concurrently at The Kitchen and Casa Don Alfonso – two exquisite restaurants at Grand Lisboa – displaying 17 universe-themed glass art masterpieces created by local artist Dr. Meng Shu to offer viewers an organic exchange of cross-sensory experience conjoining art, people and architectural space.
In support of the first edition of Macau’s mega culture event “Art Macao”, SJM’s “ART • Appreciation • Legacy” acknowledges both East and West cultures and plays host to seven multitudinous exhibitions at Grand Lisboa, Lisboa, Oceanus at Jai Alai, Ponte 16 Resort and Regency Art Hotel from June to October. Exhibitions include Special Exhibition of Coin du Jardin by Paul Gauguin in June, A Tribute to Wu Guanzhong on his 100th Birth Anniversary in July, Visions of Chinese Tradition – Chinese Lacquer works and Art in Motion – Video art from Portugal in August, the 4th Y Show in September, and Portuguese-speaking Authors – Works from the collection of the PLMJ Foundation and Celestial Sphere – Contemporary Glass Art Exhibition by Meng Shu in October. Featuring works from various periods and culture backgrounds created with an array of media, SJM’s “ART • Appreciation • Legacy” aims to foster a new brand of cultural tourism while enabling Macau’s residents and visitors to be immersed in a unique East-meets-West art experience.
