Sociedade de Jogos de Macau, S.A. (“SJM”) staged the third and the fourth exhibitions of SJM’s “ART • Appreciation • Legacy” series at various SJM properties side-by-side in August 2019, featuring both the tranquility of China’s lacquer paintings and the exuberance of Portuguese video art. These exhibitions, after that of Paul Gauguin and Wu Guanzhong, continued to highlight the beauty of Macau’s east-west culture.

On view from 1 to 30 August, Visions of Chinese Tradition assembled the captivating creations of 6 acclaimed Chinese lacquer artists at the hotel lobby of Grand Lisboa, Macau. Chinese lacquer painting is derived from the longstanding lacquer art, which is an important art form in Chinese art history. Jiangxi has been a major lacquer art town in China since ancient times, with a huge number of exquisite lacquer wares unearthed there. Its lacquer paintings are one of the representatives of modern lacquer art, distinguished by its use of traditional techniques to present innovative and expressive ideas and winning acclaim for its varied styles and vivid colours.  Participating artists included Huang Gui-wen, Zeng Jun-yi, Gong Guo-ping, Wang Xi-mei, Xiong Jian-xin and Liu Kuan.

At the same time, another exhibition – Art in Motion – Video art from Portugal – displayed videos of contemporary Portuguese artists to the public. This show was the result of a selection of 17 pieces, produced by renowned Portuguese artists having different backgrounds, paths and postures. They have adopted video as the chosen means of expression. The works were shown on four outdoor screens at SJM’s Grand Lisboa, Lisboa, Oceanus at Jai Alai and Ponte 16 Resort, as well as on TV screens in the guest rooms at Grand Lisboa Hotel.

 

In support of the first edition of Macau’s mega culture event “Art Macao”, SJM’s “ART • Appreciation • Legacy” acknowledges both East and West cultures and plays host to seven multitudinous exhibitions at Grand Lisboa, Lisboa, Oceanus at Jai Alai, Ponte 16 Resort and Regency Art Hotel from June to October. In addition to Special Exhibition of Coin du Jardin by Paul Gauguin, A Tribute to Wu Guanzhong on his 100^th Birth Anniversary, Visions of Chinese Tradition – Chinese Lacquer works and Art in Motion – Video art from Portugal, the upcoming shows will be the 4^th Y Show (1 – 29 September) as well as the exhibition of works by Portuguese speaking authors from the collection of The PLMJ Foundation and Contemporary Glass Art Exhibition by Shu MENG (1 – 31 October). Featuring works from various periods and culture backgrounds created with an array of media, SJM’s “ART • Appreciation • Legacy” aims to foster a new brand of cultural tourism while enabling Macau’s residents and visitors to be immersed in a unique East-meets-West art experience.
