2018 SJM Charity Auction and Michelin-starred Dinner raised MOP2,936,000 for Macau Charities
MOP2,936,000 was raised at the 2018 SJM Charity Auction and Michelin-starred Dinner hosted by Sociedade de Jogos de Macau, S.A. (“SJM”) at the Grand Lisboa, Macau on 6 December 2018. All proceeds raised from the charity auction were donated to ten charities in Macau.
Board members of SJM and SJM Holdings Ms. Daisy Ho, Ms. Angela Leong, Dr. Ambrose So, Mr. Louis Ng, Dr. David Lan, Dr. Rui Cunha, Ms. Maisy Ho and Ms. Connie Kong celebrated the evening with guests from Macau and Hong Kong with a sumptuous Chinese banquet featuring white truffles prepared by the culinary team led by Executive Chef Joseph Tse from the renowned three-Michelin-starred The Eight at Grand Lisboa.
The high point of the evening was the auction of a giant 1,000-gram Italian white truffle. After intense bidding, SJM, represented by Managing Director and Chief Administrative Officer Ms. Angela Leong, was the successful bidder for the item at MOP1.6 million.
Other auction items included one bottle (0.75L) of Romanée-Conti 2001 and one bottle (3L) of Montrachet 2011, a deluxe VIP Travel Package to Japan – two business class tickets to Osaka plus two nights in a Premier Room at Four Seasons Hotel Kyoto and dinner for two at Michelin-starred restaurant Sushi Wakon, and a pair of racing gloves worn by 2018 SJM Theodore Racing driver Zhou Guanyu at Pau de Grand Prix, making him the first Chinese driver to win a FIA Formula 3 European Championship.
This year’s charity auction also comprised a silent auction held during the cocktail reception, offering four items for bidding: Italian white truffles weighing 400 grams, sun-dried Japanese Amidori abalones weighing 600 grams, a painting by local Macau artist A-Cheng, and a Grand Lisboa Hotel Premium Package – one night stay in the Chairman Suite of Grand Lisboa Hotel including breakfast for two plus dinner at Robuchon au Dôme with “Le Menu Prestige”. In view of the overwhelming response from the bidders, an additional auction lot of Italian white truffles weighing 400 grams was added to the silent auction.
All proceeds raised from the charity auction were donated to ten Macau charities, namely Tung Sin Tong Charitable Society, Kiang Wu Hospital Charitable Association, Obra das Mães, Macau Special Olympics, Macau Holy House of Mercy, Charity Fund From The Readers of Macao Daily News (2018 Walk for a Million), Caritas de Macau (2019 Caritas Macau Charity Bazaar), Yat On Responsible Gaming Counselling Centre, Macau Social Services Centre and Macau Association of the Hearing Impaired. A cheque presentation ceremony attended by representatives of the ten charities was held immediately after the auction.
Dr. Ambrose So, Chairman of the Board of Directors of SJM, said, “This year marks the twelfth anniversary of our charity auction and dinner, which follows the tradition established by our founder, Dr. Stanley Ho, in giving back to the local community. We are delighted to see that the spirited bidding for the auction items has successfully raised MOP2,936,000 for worthy charities in Macau.”
This year’s charity night featured a special Chinese dinner prepared by The Eight restaurant. The Eight celebrates its fifth consecutive year holding Michelin’s highest accolade – it is also the first and only Chinese restaurant in Macau awarded with three Michelin stars. During the dinner, guests also enjoyed enchanting performances by the acclaimed soprano Ms. Wang Mingjie (王明潔) and singer Ms. Du Yan (杜岩) from China.
