SJM hosts Science-themed Reading Workshop for families in support of “4.23 Reading in the City” to cultivate reading culture
April 14, 2024 – As part of its commitment to cultivating a culture of reading and learning across Macau, SJM Resorts, S.A. (“SJM”) supports “4.23 Reading in the City,” co-organised by the Cultural Affairs Bureau and the Education and Youth Development Bureau of the Macau SAR Government. Ahead of the occasion, SJM held an engaging family reading workshop at the Macao Science Center on 14 April. This workshop welcomed nearly 60 children and parents from the General Union of Neighbourhood Associations of Macau, the Women’s General Association of Macau, and the Macau Federation of Trade Unions, encouraging them to delve into the joy of exploring the wonders of science through reading.
Among the distinguished guests at the event were Ms. Mok Ian Ian, President of the Board of Directors of Macao Science Center Limited; Mr. U Hon Sang, Director of Macao Science Center Limited; Mr. Daniel Shim, Chief Corporate Affairs Officer of SJM; Ms. Ng Sio Lai, Director of the General Union of Neighbourhood Associations of Macao; Ms. Cheung Pui Peng, Vice President of the Women’s General Association of Macau, and Ms. Leong Meng Ian, Vice Chairman of the Macau Federation of Trade Unions, whose presence underscores their support for the initiative.
Guided by SJM team members, participants had a wonderful time at the “Science Popularization Picture Book Library,” enjoying books of popular science and a science-themed drama. The new books and drama productions are part of the “Science and Reading Literacy Enhancement Programme,” which is sponsored by SJM and supported by the Education and Youth Development Bureau of the Macau SAR Government. It aims to promote self-exploration and a reading culture in local community, expand the public’s scientific knowledge, and nurture the scientific interests among the younger generation. Furthermore, the families were invited to enjoy a dome movie at the Planetarium and engage in interactive play at the MSC Kids World, underscoring SJM’s belief in the power of learning through fun and entertainment.
For years, SJM has been promoting a reading culture within the local community through various initiatives, such as scholarships, interactive experiences, and science education projects. Following the successful sponsorship of the “2023 STEAM x Picture Books x Storytelling” event, this year SJM has stepped up its support and continues to back Macao Science Center’s new science educational initiative “Science and Reading Literacy Enhancement Programme.” SJM is committed to continuing its support for the government’s initiative to transform Macau into a “City of Reading,” thereby contributing to the diversified development of the city.
