
SJM committed to responsible gambling promotion in 2023
21 November 2023 – Demonstrating unwavering support for responsible gambling, SJM Resorts, S.A. (“SJM”) has aligned with the Macau SAR Government's initiatives in this vital area. Participating in the "Responsible Gambling Promotion 2023," co-organised with key institutions including the Social Welfare Bureau, the Gaming Inspection and Coordination Bureau, and the Institute for the Study of Commercial Gaming at the University of Macau, SJM has orchestrated an array of activities. A highlight was the "SJM Responsible Gambling Promotion 2023 – Responsible Gambling Competition and Course Certificate Award Ceremony," hosted at the Grand Ballroom of Grand Lisboa Hotel on 21 November. This event celebrated employees' active engagement in responsible gambling promotions, reinforcing SJM's commitment to nurturing a sustainable future for Macau’s gaming and tourism industry.
The ceremony was graced by distinguished guests including Yang Yi, Deputy Director of the Economic Affairs Department of the Liaison Office of the Central People's Government in the Macao SAR, along with other notable figures from various governmental and educational institutions, namely, Ms. Ng On Lou, Aster, Head of Research and Data Analysis Division of the Gaming Inspection and Coordination Bureau, Ms. Wu I Mui, Bonnie, Division Head of Problem Gambling Prevention and Treatment Division, Ms. Cheang Sut Chan, Head of Centre of Moral Education of the Education and Youth Development Bureau (“DSEDJ”), Ms. Ho Sut Heng, President of the Macao Federation of Trade Unions, Mr. Leong Sun Iok, Chairman of the Gambling Industry Workers’ Home, Professor Fong Ka Chio, Director of Gambling Research Institute of the University of Macau, Mr. Johnny Siu, Deputy Director of Centre for Gaming and Tourism Studies, Macao Polytechnic University, Ms. Wu Wai Han, Jackie, Unit in-charge of Sheng Kung Hui Gambling Counseling and Family Wellness Centre, Mr. Song Wai Kit, Billy, President of Macau Responsible Gaming Association, Mr. Siu Yu Hong, President of Yat On Centre, Professor Karen Cheung, Director of Hong Kong Institute of Education for Sustainable Development. , SJM's Managing Director Ms. Daisy Ho, Director and Chairman of the SJM Staff Welfare Consultative Committee Ms. Angela Leong, , and Secretary-General Dr. Rui Cunha were also in attendance.
In her address, Ms. Angela Leong, Director and Chairman of the SJM Staff Welfare Consultative Committee lauded the group’s achievements in responsible gambling, citing the recognition of six SJM entertainment venues as “Responsible Gaming Implementation Model Unit” last year, and the continuous efforts to achieve certification for more venues this year. These accomplishments have highlighted SJM's dedication to enhancing responsible gambling practices in Macau. The company remains steadfast in working closely with the government and community to broaden and deepen initiatives in this area. These efforts are geared towards raising awareness about responsible gambling among the public, thus contributing to the sustainable growth of the local tourism and leisure sector.
Based on the 2023 responsible gambling campaign theme 'Seeking Help for Winning the Future', SJM organised various events, including training seminars, board game experiences, community outreach, and gaming competitions. Among these was the “Responsible Gambling Knowledge Quiz Competition”, which deepened employees’ understanding of responsible gaming principles and regulations. All teams exhibited great teamwork and commitment, with the Grand Lisboa team emerging victorious, and the Grand Lisboa Palace and Legend Palace teams coming in second and third, respectively. The campaign also featured other games and online activities, engaging nearly 6,000 participants. Additionally, SJM continues to organise seminars, board games, and other interesting activities for new employees, frontline staff, and responsible gambling officers. It has also set up booth games in the back-end areas, drawing participation from nearly 21,000 people.
Moreover, SJM prioritised enhancing employees' professional qualifications in responsible gambling. Over 90 staff members successfully completed various certified courses and internships in collaboration with government and institutional partners including “Certificate in Macau Responsible Gambling Advisor”, “Sustainable Development in Macau Tourism, Leisure, Entertainment – Responsible Gaming”, “Gaming Employee Home – RG Board Game Leadership Program”, “Responsible Gambling Advanced Learning Course, “Certified Gambling Counsellor Training Course accredited by the Canadian Council of Professional Certification” and the training courses jointly organised by SJM and Yat On Centre. These initiatives are part of SJM's ongoing efforts to uphold the highest standards of responsible gambling in Macau.

Through partnerships with social service groups, educational institutions, and professional bodies, SJM is committed to promoting the responsible gaming ethos, thereby fostering a sustainable, healthy, and stable Macau society.
