18 May 2023 - SJM Resorts S.A. (“SJM”) and the Judiciary Police of the Macao SAR Government co-organised a "Gaming Crime Prevention Workshop" which aimed to raise awareness and combat gambling-related crimes, foster police-civilian cooperation, and safeguard the healthy development of the gaming industry.
The workshop was held at Grand Lisboa Hotel Grand Ballroom on 18 May 2023, with 14 officers from the Judiciary Police's Gaming and Economic Crime Investigation Division delivering lectures and participating in group discussions with 55 SJM employees from various departments, including Security, Gaming Operations, Electronic Gaming, Food and Beverage, Hotel Operations, Resort Premium Market Development, Surveillance, and Accounting, attended the workshop.
During the workshop, the Police provided detailed introductions to their organisational structure, reporting procedures, responsibilities, and relevant laws in Macau. They focused on explaining various forms of gambling-related crimes, emerging security issues related to cybercrime and telephone fraud. Through videos and real-life cases, the Police covered criminal law knowledge related to common cybercrimes such as online romance scams, pyramid schemes, domestic violence, crime scene preservation, evidence protection, and drug-related crimes. The goal was to enhance crime prevention awareness and capabilities of SJM employees.
Following the workshop, employees of SJM and Police personnel engaged in group discussions, exchanging views on daily work and security issues. The Police also presented models of drugs for the first time, deepening participants' understanding of different types of drugs. A lively Q&A session with prizes was held, and employees were encouraged to share the crime prevention knowledge gained from the workshop with their families and friends. This enables the establishment of a communication and cooperation mechanism between the police and the public, jointly preventing and combating crimes while promoting the healthy development of society and the gaming industry.
Mr. Leong Kin Wai, Head of the Gaming-related Crimes Patron Section of Judiciary Police expressed gratitude for SJM's continuous collaboration. The Police are committed to working with various sectors of society, promoting fraud prevention and education. The workshop aimed to provide continuous crime prevention knowledge training for frontline casino employees, raising awareness of new scam approaches and emerging trends. The goal is to enhance public awareness and vigilance against scams, gradually reducing the risk of fraudulent crimes and contributing to community security and stability.
Participating employees found the workshop content-rich and highly practical, significantly enhancing their awareness of criminal behaviour and prevention. It increased their alertness to fraud crimes, effectively helping them avoid becoming victims of scams. The acquired crime prevention knowledge will be applied in their daily lives and shared with colleagues and family members.
As a local enterprise in Macau, SJM fully supports the government's policies and will continue promoting employee participation in crime prevention workshops. Together, they aim to establish a stronger protective network against crime for employees in the gaming industry.
