
SJM advocates for Responsible Gaming To safeguard healthy and harmonious societal development
Dedicated to promoting responsible gaming (“RG”), SJM Resorts, S.A. (“SJM”) proactively supports the Macau SAR Government in its exemplary efforts, and works in close partnership with social entities, colleges, universities, and professional institutions to educate and publicize the importance of the cause. This year, SJM enrolled in the newly implemented “Responsible Gambling Indicators” program, an important initiative undertaken by the Government to further promote responsible gaming and elevate its standard in Macau.
SJM Responsible Gaming Promotion 2022 – RG Award & Sustainable Development Planning Certificate Presentation Ceremony was held in the afternoon on 14 October 2022 at the Grand Lisboa Hotel Grand Ballroom. Attending the ceremony were Mr. Yang Yi, Deputy Director of the Economic Affairs Department of Liaison Office of the Central People's Government in MSAR, Ms. Ng On Lou, Senior Officer of Gaming Research and Liaison Department from the Gaming Inspection and Co-ordination Bureau, Ms. Elaine Tang, Sub-division Head from the Social Welfare Bureau, Ms. Cheang Sut Chan, Head of Centre of Moral Education of the DSEDJ, Mr. Samuel Sam, Vice President from the Macao Federation of Trade Unions, Professor Fong Ka Chio of the University of Macau, Professor Wang Changbin, Director of the Centre for Gaming and Tourism Studies from Macao Polytechnic University, Mr. Song Wai Kit, President of the Macau Responsible Gaming Association, Mr. Lee Kwok Hoo, Service Director from Sheng Kung Hui Macau Social Services Coordination Office, Mr. Pak Kin Pong, Supervisor from Macao Gaming Industry Employee Home Integrated Services Centre, President of Yat On Centre, Mr. Siu Yu Hong, Professor Koo Her Yen Hannah from Hong Kong Institute of Education for Sustainable Development, Managing Director of SJM, Ms. Daisy Ho, Director of SJM, Ms. Angela Leong, and Secretary-General of SJM, Dr. Rui Cunha.
This year’s “Lost Control, Lose Family” campaign was designed around “family” as the core focus and comprised a variety of games and contests. The trivia quiz held earlier advanced practitioners’ understanding of the importance of responsible gaming, the relevant legislation, and evolution of the industry. The event challenged participating teams to collaborate and communicate, Team “Hotel Lisboa” was crowned champion, while Team “Jai Alai and Oceanus” and Team “Ponte 16” took the second and third place. Other responsible gaming events including “RG Let’s See What is Right or Wrong”, “RG Knowledge Competition”, “RG Knowledge We Must Know”, “RG Kiosk Q&A”, and “Rollercoaster Ride with Your Family” collectively attracted close to 7000 participants.
SJM consistently trains new employees, front-end staff and responsible gaming officers through special-themed seminars and interactive activities, which include setting up game booths in backend areas, popularly participated by close to 17,000 staff as of date. This year, 80 staff were awarded professional accreditations after completing programs in relation to responsible gaming, These programs were offered by the government and various education institutions, including “Certificate Program for Macau Responsible Gaming Trainer”, Proficiency Certificate Course “Sustainable Development in Macau Tourism, Leisure, Entertainment – Responsible Gaming”, “Gaming Employee Home – RG Board Game Leadership Program” and “Canadian Council of Professional Certification” etc.
Complementing government’s efforts in establishing an independent assessment benchmark on responsible gaming, SJM properties have enrolled in the newly introduced “Responsible Gambling Indicators” program this year and are in the process of applying for certification, with Grand Lisboa and Grand Lisboa Palace among the first to qualify as “Responsible Gaming Implementation Model Unit”.

SJM’s dedicated efforts in strengthening responsible gaming is widely recognized by the government, the industry, and all stakeholders. Since 2020, The World Institute of Sustainable Development Planners (WISDP) has been recognizing SJM as a Certified Sustainable Development Corporation (CSDC).
