SJM Resorts, S.A. (“SJM”) jointly organised the “Gaming Crime Prevention Workshop” with the Policia Judiciária (Judiciary Police) of Macau on 11 April 2022, to raise staff members’ awareness regarding crime prevention and implement measures to deter criminal activity on casinos and hotels properties.  This event aimed to ensure healthy development of the gaming industry with the collaboration between its stakeholders and the authorities.

On the day, the Judiciary Police sent a team of 18 criminal investigators to the workshop held at Grand Lisboa Hotel, and was well attended by 50 SJM staff from multiple departments including security, casino operations, information technology, anti-money laundering, and hotel management. In compliance with government’s anti-pandemic measures, all participants were required to present a green “health code”, wear masks and distance socially.

The Judiciary Police delivered on a diverse range of topics and shared real life cases covering gaming-related offences, internet crimes, telephone scams, as well as legal information on counterfeit currency and money laundering. In addition, subjects including domestic violence, preserving evidence at crime scenes, and crime reporting procedure were also addressed. Breakout discussions allowed staff to discuss possible scenarios at work and in life, and they were taught self-protection measures to handle them.  Staff members were encouraged to further share their acquired knowledge from the workshop with their families and friends to advance awareness in the wider community.

Mr. Leong Kin Wai, representative of the Judiciary Police, expressed his gratitude towards SJM for its continuous support and for making the workshop accessible to its frontline employees. He reiterated that education is an integral part of combating crimes. He reaffirmed that the Judiciary Police will continue to share the latest information about fraud operations to better equip the society in protecting itself and its properties.

Ms Angela Leong, Managing Director of SJM and Chairman of the SJM Staff Welfare Consultative Committee, commented that despite ever-evolving fraud trends in recent years, the number of fraud cases has declined under the joint efforts of the Judiciary Police of the Macau SAR Government and the local community. Given a significant portion of the labour force is employed by Macau’s integrated tourism and leisure industry, open communication and concerted efforts between the industry and law enforcers are instrumental to crime prevention. By organising activities such as the Gaming Crime Prevention Workshop, SJM’s staff could learn to stay vigilant and be more aware of the different types of crime, as well as understand their roles in crime prevention. They can also become the conduit in sharing their knowledge with their families, colleagues and the community.
